The Canossian mission in India began in 1889, when five courageous Canossian Sisters arrived in Cochin from Hong Kong on 24 November 1889. The first overseas Canossian mission had earlier been established in Hong Kong in 1860, marking the beginning of the Congregation’s missionary expansion beyond Italy.
In 1891, the Sisters moved from Cochin to Belgaum, where the first house of the Province was established. As the mission continued to grow, several new communities were opened in different parts of India. These communities were gradually organized into two Regions and later, in 1947, formed one Delegation with its headquarters in Bombay.
In 1966, the Delegation was officially established as a Province. With the rapid growth of foundations and ministries, the Congregation in India was further divided in 1988 into three Provinces: India-Centre, India-South, and India-North. The Province of St. Francis Xavier – India Centre continues this rich legacy of faith, charity, and humble service inspired by St. Magdalene of Canossa.
