Canossa Convent, Galgibaga 1986

Galgibaga – Goa

Galgibaga is situated in South Goa. It is skirted by green fields, sea coast and hillocks. The Canossians were invited here by Fr. Antonio Lopes the parish priest and principal of the School there. The Archbishop of Goa was keen that interior places such as Galgibaga have religious to cater to the moral and spiritual development of the people, so the four Canossians moved into Galgibaga in 1986. They began their educational and pastoral apostolate with great fervor even though their residence was in some rented house. The Convent was built and blessed in 1991. A Sister taught in the primary school of the Parish and another taught in the private K.G section. The other Sisters attended to the coaching classes and conducted tailoring classes for school drop outs. The Sisters worked together joyfully and lovingly teaching catechism, forming the youth, training altar servers and helping in the liturgy.

The people of Galgibaga wanted to keep the pristine beauty of the beach and its surroundings free from tourists hence they protested and would not allow the place to be developed as a tourist center. Job opportunities are poor here it being situated in a very remote southernmost point of Goa. Hence the youth get educated and move out to greener pastures. Most people have migrated to foreign countries of U.K, Gulf countries etc. where they are doing very well. Thus the population is depleted and we are challenged to seek ways of reaching out to the people.
